15/02/2016

Opening of the exhibition about architect Nikola Dobrović will be held on 23 February 2016 at 7 pm in Oris House of Architecture in Zagreb.

The exhibition is related to the publication of the book Dobrović in Dubrovnik – A Venture in Modern Architecture, authored by Krunoslav Ivanišin, Wolfgang Thaler and Ljiljana Blagojević and presenting some of the most important works by Dobrović constructed in the 1930s in the Mediterranean landscape of the south Dalmatian coast. A conversation with the authors of the book will be held at the opening.

The exhibition will show original  drawings, black-and-white photographs and contemporary color photographs by Wolfgang Thaler. There will also be an accompanying talk with authors of the book Dobrović in Dubrovnik – A Venture in Modern Architecture - Ljiljana Blagojević (Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade), Krunoslav Ivanišin (Faculty od Architecture in Zagreb) and Wolfgang Thaler, that will be moderated by Dubravko Bačić.

The architect, Nikola Dobrović, worked in Dubrovnik from the beginning of 30s until World War II, and in this relatively short time period he designed and mainly realized a number of family houses, public buildings and so-called park arrangements, having significantly contributed to the nation’s post-war identity resisting the influence of tradition. Born in 1897 in Pečuh, he graduated in 1923 from the Department of Architecture of the Higher Technical School in Prague. After World War II, he worked in Belgrade, and was elected a corresponding member outside the active body of the JAZU Department of Visual Arts. For the Croatian culture Dobrović’s first prize winning projects at international competitions for Banovina hospital and the Bačvice strand in Split in 1930 are of significance, as well as the competition project for the Zagreb hospital from 1931, the post-war proposal for the Zagreb Main Railway Station, traffic regulations and no less Dobrović’s comprehensive theoretical work, often precisely dealing with the architecture problems of new Dubrovnik.

As part of the exhibition programme, on 3 March 2016 at 7 p.m. Krunoslav Ivanišin will deliver a lecture on the work of Nikola Dobrović in Dubrovnik.

The exhibition will remain opened until 8 March 2016.
