Lecture: the next ENTERprise Beyond Facts and Fiction

06/06/2018

Lecture by the next ENTERprise Architects titled Beyond Facts and Fiction will be held on Thursday, 14 June 2018, at 7 pm in Oris House of Architecture.

The provocation of the random and the unpredictable is our strategy in approaching the spatial and programmatic aspects of architecture. We work to discover the factors leading beyond pure functionality – it is how we see the essence of architecture.

tnE Architects believe that space truly discovers its function upon being used. This way of thinking opens up a discourse in which concepts and spatial strategies – as related to unforeseeable, future needs and developments – play a key role. The programmatic and spatial limits of their buildings and concepts are conceived with a consciously high level of permeability on the basis of the performative potential of architecture and the interplay between space, atmosphere, context and user.

the next ENTERprise Architects was founded in Vienna in 2000 by Marie-Therese Harnoncourt-Fuchs and Ernst J. Fuchs. Their projects range from buildings, installations, exhibition design and experimental interventions in the cityscape to urban design concepts. Their key projects include Seebad Kaltern/Lido di Caldaro (IT) – an adventure pool that is transformed in the evening into an event location, the Wolkenturm in Grafenegg Castle Garden – one of the most highly-rated international open air stages, the Datenfeld/Haus Zirl, the Wolke 7 catering pavilion in Grafenegg, which was awarded the Client Prize of the Central Association of Austrian Architects in November 2017, and the installations Audiolounge and Noeklius_informed sculpture. Another important example of the approach of tnE Architects is the project HAWI – experimental temporary living, which not only represents an innovative residential concept but also acts as part of a hybrid urban building block in the context of the Kempelenpark pilot project.

The buildings of tnE have been published internationally and nominated and acknowledged on a number of occasions. Marie-Therese Harnoncourt-Fuchs and Ernst J. Fuchs have been active as teachers and lecturers in Austria and abroad since 1998 and have acted as members of a number of advisory boards and competition juries.

Projects and installations by tnE have been seen a number of times at the Architecture Biennale in Venice (2004, 2008, 2010, 2016) – most recently the project HAWI – experimental temporary living was exhibited in the Austrian Pavilion. Further contributions to exhibitions include the travelling exhibition making waves in the People’s Republic of China (2003), how to start a city at the São Paulo Biennale (2003), Archilab Orléans (2000, 2001, 2003), Audiolounge at Manifesta 7 in Roverto (2008), Trinkbrunnen in the Mackey Garages / MAK Los Angeles (2010), aut. architektur und tirol (2012, 2017), Latent utopias at the Steirischen Herbst in Graz (2002), Trespassing – Shaping Spatial Practice at the Secession Building, Vienna (2002), Quelle architecture pour la Culture? at the Galerie d´Architecture in Paris (2012), the Aedes Gallery in Berlin (2004, 2014) and Vienna for Art’s Sake at the Winter Palace of the Belvedere, Vienna (2015).

The monograph about the next ENTERprise Architects Close to the Bone was published by DAMDI Architecture Publishing, Seoul in 2007.

The lecture will be delivered in English.
