In the 2nd century AD the Romans founded the town of Sepianae, known today as Pečuh. Later, in the 4th century, the inhabitants built a city of the dead – an old Roman and early Christian cemetery. Today, after 1600 years and after time, nature and people have sucessfully buried all this, and partially demolished it, some parts of this impressive burial complex have come back to light. The research and excavations began in the first half of the 20th century, based on the ideas of architect and archeologist Gyula Gosztonnyi.
