Art has always been an advocate of intellectual freedom, the right to be different and to resist, and it represents an existential basis for understanding the world. Contemporary capitalist society promotes and praises art, in as much as it brings in money. The traditional arts, like theatre and opera, characterized by high investments and maintenance costs on the one hand, and almost general non-profitability on the other, are being pushed into the background.
