Almost two million people travel the pilgrimage route through the mountain scenery of the Mexican province of Jalisco during Holy Week. As they walk towards their catharsis, they can count on the support of elementary, archetypal architectural objects – shrines, simple places to spend the night, gazebos providing shelter and orientation in an unfamiliar environment. The mantle of a cylinder floating above the trees, a cut in the ground, or the free composition of concrete prisms is enough to define spaces of prayer and contemplation.
