When a building is being renovated, the architect’s attitude towards the building is crucial, but should result in an architectural intervention that enables the efficient operation of both the new and the old programme.

The renovation of historical buildings must involve the participation of the generally conservative profession of monument protection, which often equates quality with all that is old, wants to preserve it and frequently demands questionable measures for the protection or replication of a thing from the past. This makes it more difficult to make radical renovations in the sense of contemporary architectural interventions.
