It could be stated that the notion of campus or college is instilled into the very foundations of Western, and certainly the Anglo-American, civilization. The tradition of a university ‘town’ reaches far back into the Middle Ages (Oxford was founded in the mid 12th century and Cambridge at the beginning of the 13th century, of course at that time as part of church schools).
