The middle section of the Chilean littoral is a traditional holiday destination for the population of the metropolitan region, with the city of Santiago, that makes up 40 percent of the Chilean population and 43 percent of GDP. The coastal area between the towns of Cachagua and Zapallar, the traditional summer resorts, has seen a significant increase in construction in the past dozen years along the regional road that connects them.
