The title ‘Architect as Producer’ is a paraphrase of the title of a lecture from 1934 in which Walter Benjamin dethroned the artist from the pedestal of creator and placed him in the middle of the production relations of his time, by defining him as an author-producer. The old materialist question about the relation of a work of art towards the social relations in the production of his time, Benjamin replaced with the question of how it stood in the social relations of his time and with that, he aimed at the function which a work had in the artistic relations of production, in other words, at its technical side.
