Relying on the Old

Every architectural project always to some extent also builds on something, in other words, it relies on what was before, symbolically or physically, with more or less awareness or appreciation. This ‘beneath’ or ‘before’ – whether it is the history of a physical context or the discipline itself, or is merely a momentary normative or nature of a programmatic typology – thus becomes a foundation, a basis for construction, but also a burden which then (in)forms potential solutions, narrowing to a great extent the future formative manoeuvring space.
