Today, Bled and its surroundings can serve as an inexhaustible source of inspiration and information (in spite of the dispersive quality and illogical urbanization of the 20th century) of how architecture in the past used to react with understanding to a place’s genius loci. The broader area of Lake Bled is exceptionally dramatic, and it was inhabited back in primeval times. Man occupied key positions – the island and castle – while the edge of the lake remained vacant, without construction, for a long time. In its hinterland, a network of roads used to connect individual villages, and each of the villages had its own logic of urban planning and inner structure.
