Creating a Parallel Reality

44th Zagreb Salon of Architecture

written by Maroje Mrduljaš

Those who keep track of the visual arts scene in Croatia still recall the shock provoked by the 33rd Zagreb Salon. In fact, 1998 was the first time in the history of that leading exhibition event in Croatia that an independent curator was appointed – at the time it was Slovenian critic Igor Zabel – to put together his own authorial selection of current art production. The Salon has undergone a change from a revue type atmosphere, to a more consistent project with a critical perspective, while the often unbalanced quality of artefacts had to step down before authorial reading and interpretation based on contemporary tendencies in Croatian art.
