At first glance, the buildings of Tezuka Architects (the charming, color-coded married couple of Takaharu and Yui Tezuka) always appear simple, humble, and relaxed. Yet it soon becomes clear that in each project some element has been pushed to the limit, exaggerated into an overarching theme – although always based on function, only incidentally on shape. Sensitive to time, climate, and season, the Tezukas’ recurring use of wide roof decks, high ceilings, huge windows, long arrays of sliding panels and operable walls is an outcome of proposed lifestyles, not a desire to be spectacular.
