The first line on paper is already a measure of what cannot be expressed fully. The first line on paper is less.
Louis Kahn

Trying to pinpoint the focus of the architectural event as the source of our everyday experience of a room, Kahn chose light as the ’giver of all presences’, paraphrasing a quote from a poem by Wallace Stevens to show his belief that natural light is the primary determiner of the value of rooms as spaces:

“A great American poet once asked the architect, ’What slice of sun does your building have? What light enters your room?’ – as if to say the sun never knew how great it is until it struck the side of a building.”
