While pondering the “birth” of an autonomous dimension Norwegian architect Sverre Fehn asks whether a brick can be considered a basic letter in the architect’s alphabet, and if so, how the architect can express his creative temperament through it. Certainly, he does make a response through the choice of the texture and colour of the brick; and yet in the joint, in the space between, lies the true weapon of the architect. In these few millimetres an entire story of architecture can be told. In this contact the architect can succeed or fail. It seems this is how JKMM Architects (Asmo Jaaksi, Teemu Kurkela, Samuli Miettinen and Juha Mäki-Jyllilä) were thinking when designing Viikki Church in Helsinki.
