Alpine architecture. The words inevitably conjure up wooden facades, geraniums in the window, long sloping eaves, Heidi in braids, an apple orchard and a vineyard nearby, and air just oozing with ozone and chlorophyll. Or fairytale castles perched above craggy cliffs. This is not what Hans Hollein’s new Centrum Bank building in the tiny  town of Vaduz, nestled in the Alpine principality of Liechtenstein, looks like, however. Perish the pretty, woodsy topos. This building is completely modern. And yet its identity is wholly Alpine.
