In terms of modern liturgy, the altar of St Leopold’s Church on the Steinhof was in need of a people’s altar and a pulpit. This demanding task has been masterfully solved by Dieter Hanke and Marta Schreieck in cooperation with a qualified team of decorative arts professionals.

 

Does a Gesamtkunstwerk need anything else added to it? Especially when the author is Otto Wagner himself – are they allowed to?¹ The Federal Office for the Preservation of Monuments allows interventions only as an exception, when they will cause no harm to the historic substance and when it is possible to return to the prior state.
