Kindergarten and nursery architecture tries to develop sensitivity and intelligence in children while establishing a balance between protection and stimulation. The contradiction of upbringing lies in providing the child with the freedom and stimulation to explore boundaries, and at the same time offering best protection.

It is pedagogical programmes that regulate the functional schemes of kindergartens; as a result the model of kindergartens designed and built today is rather inflexible: units and toilet facilities, regulations, isolation and group separations. The schemes, appearing to stick closely to the strict hygiene and functional norms of health care buildings, complicate the architectural interpretation of the theme.
