123 The Esplanade, in the suburb of Brighton in Adelaide is not the typical Australian beach-side house. It doesn’t fall into the norms of Australian pseudo-regionalism or good taste modernism, where innocuous politeness rules with impunity. Adelaide is the capital of the state of South Australia, and is planned on a rational grid established in the nineteenth century by the colonialist Colonel Light. While its climate and relaxed pace of life make it a desirable and relatively civil place to live, where many people from all over the world have comfortably settled, it is also widely regarded as one of Australia’s most provincial and conservative cities.
