Reflections of History

A part of the monumental impression of the Meštrović family house in Split is achieved by powerful access stairs leading to the porch with its Ionian colonnade, by the symmetry of the heavy horizontal front and interior and by the grandeur of the entrance hall with its high coffered ceiling. The building was designed and built by Harold Bilinić, Lavoslav Horvat and Ivan Meštrović, the aim being to use powerful expression to enforce the sense of its presence. Hence the building itself cannot easily coexist with any other architectural intervention in its strictly defined interior.
