In the 1930s Zagreb’s pioneers of modern design built their white “cubes” and thus established principles of modern living, which corresponded to ideas in modern European architecture of the time. “The aim is a clean living hygiene. There is economizing in the size of everything possible – from kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, as well as in the height of the rooms themselves, but each adult gets his or her own room. The kitchen is equipped with a gas and electric cooker, hot water. Every flat has a bathroom heated by gas or electricity. Roofs are replaced by flat terraces for sunbathing and recreation and the flats are surrounded by greenery. According to W. Gropius they are “minimum existence flats”.
