The Barcelona School is an architectural direction which characterises most of what Catalan architecture realized in the period from 1950s to the 1992 Olympic Games. International influences – mostly from Nordic countries and Italy – merged with the local tradition, in professional sense, in form of the, so-called, realistic constructive practice. Realism was achieved by employing competence of local craftsmen without imposing constructive methods, by expressing architecture with well-composed conventional elements and, possibly, by their reinterpretation and reinvention. It was additionally achieved by adapting to each individual project, in the form of exploration of the boundaries which define each of the elements, while preserving their identity.
