Quest for the Essence of Architecture

interviewed by Tomislav Pavelić

What first springs to mind when we think of the work of Terunobu Fujimori are his small, fairytale-like houses. This fairytale character, however, does not stand in the way of grasping the depths of such architecture – on the contrary, it enables the uncompromising search for the very essence of architecture which is not dependent of the fundamentals of contemporariness. Fujimori’s insisting on search for the spiritual dimension of architecture and on almost exclusive application of natural materials and traditional techniques does not only pave the way towards an authentic self-expression, but also provides the possibility of the unbridled experience of space that acts as a catalyst for the relationship between the man and his environment.
