I’ve been thinking / of a little place down by the lake / they got a dirty little road leading up to the house / I wonder how long it will take till we’re alone / sitting on the front porch of that home / stomping our feet on the wooden boards / never gonna worry about locking the door (White Stripes, Hotel Yorba)

Shelter, home, nest, starting point, all these are also a limes by which we materialize ourselves, embody a conclusion and a beginning and by which dwelling emerges from a state and becomes (one’s own) place. Of all life’s turning points common to all of us, optimistic in plan and design by nature, one has a certain spatial trace: the transition into the period anchored by our own home.
