The Rijksmuseum, or the State Museum of the Netherlands, was reopened in April 2013 after a ten-year period of refurbishment. The renovation lasted a year longer than it took to construct the original project in 1885. The large investment of €375 million, three hundred times larger than the cost of the ‘original’ construction, enabled the museum to be brought up to the highest level of execution. The curious part of the story is that for the uninitiated most of the interventions in this grand project are unrecognisable or hidden underground, as if the architects were playing hide-and-seek.
