Venecijanski Bijenale arhitekture ima u usporedbi s Bijenalom likovnih umjetnosti relativno kratku tradiciju. Paolu Portoghesiju treba zahvaliti realizaciju manifestacije "Strada novissima", koja u smislu povijesti arhitekture predstavlja jedinstven
start. Ta izložba ne samo da je Veneciju dovela na geografsku kartu pozornosti suvremene arhitekture već je istovremeno bila važan doprinos i označila prekretnicu u arhitektonskom diskursu. Danas je neosporno da je taj takozvani "Bijenale postmoderne" istovremeno etablirao star-system u arhitektonskoj kulturi te tako utemeljio novu epohu u povijesti arhitekture.

The Venice Biennale of Architecture has, in comparison with the Biennale of Visual Arts, a relatively short tradition. Paolo Portoghesi should be thanked for the realization of the "Strada Novissima" exhibition which, in terms of the history of architecture,
represents a unique start. This exhibition not only placed Venice on the geographical map of awareness of contemporary architecture, but was at the same time an important contribution and marked a turning point in architectural discourse. Today, it is indisputable that this so-called
"Biennale of Postmodernism"
simultaneously established the "Star System" in architectural culture and therefore founded a new epoch in the history of architecture.
