Beneški arhitekturni bienale ima v primerjavi z bienalom likovne umetnosti razmeroma kratko tradicijo. Zasluge za uresničitev prireditve Strada novissima, ki v smislu zgodovine arhitekture predstavlja edinstven začetek, ima Paolo Portoghesi. Benetke so se, zahvaljujoč tej razstavi, znašle na geografskem zemljevidu pozornosti sodobne arhitekture, obenem pa je bila razstava pomemben prispevek in pravzaprav pomeni preobrat v arhitekturnem diskurzu. Danes nedvomno velja, da je ta t. i. bienale postmoderne v arhitekturni kulturi uveljavil tudi star system ter tako utemeljil novo obdobje v zgodovini arhitekture.

The Venice Biennale of Architecture has, in comparison with the Biennale of Visual Arts, a relatively short tradition. Paolo Portoghesi should be thanked for the realization of the "Strada Novissima" exhibition which, in terms of the history of architecture,
represents a unique start. This exhibition not only placed Venice on the geographical map of awareness of contemporary architecture, but was at the same time an important contribution and marked a turning point in architectural discourse. Today, it is indisputable that this so-called
"Biennale of Postmodernism"
simultaneously established the "Star System" in architectural culture and therefore founded a new epoch in the history of architecture.
