Think About Architecture Before Making It

architect Herman Hertzberger

Interviewed in Amsterdam, October 13th 2006

ORIS: We are sitting in your studio, located in a building that was originally designed and used as a school. Is this just a coincidence or was it a decision since your work is connected with school designs and teaching?

Hertzberger: Pure coincidence, although there is no coincidence in the world. When we saw this building, we thought this space was something we could use. It can be connected to our space idea, which is also reproduced in schools. It’s the basic space idea for a community of people who are working, active, interacting. This is what a school should be, so why not?
