In innumerable formal and informal discussions, on endless pages of architectural and other publications, the point has been made and it is generally believed that the best way of selecting the architectural solution for an urban (especially publicly financed) programme, is by launching a (public) architectural competition. The auspicious synergy of various socio-economic factors in our environment from a few years ago brought about such positive conditions that the number of public architectural competitions run (by professional associations) only in a single year, exceeded the total number of competitions held in the last decade. This was especially the case in Zagreb, where the City Council, through the Architects Society of Zagreb, during only a few years ran quite an impressive number of such competitions, mostly dedicated to the “community standard” (as it was called in the old times) design programmes: schools, kindergartens, small sports halls.
