The new extension of the Fine Arts Museum of Asturias, carried out by Francisco Mangado, is an outstanding example of thoughtful and efficient interweaving of architecture and urban fabric. Its outcome is a non-disruptive architectural action that serves to enhance the specific personality of one of the main urban spaces in the historical centre of Oviedo. It is a gesture which is particularly remarkable – as the urban complex that the Museum has already formed and that has been enlarged by the newer extension is next to the cathedral, the city’s most representative square – and which is also surrounded by streets whose image and atmosphere are etched in the memory of the ovetenses (the local demonym).
